What we light in Hutto
Most Hutto displays are the front roofline, the trees in the front yard, and a wreath or garland at the door. Every install includes a design for your house, commercial-grade lights and clips, the install, service if anything goes dark, and takedown in January.

Rooflines, porches and entries
C9 LED bulbs on commercial wire, cut to each run so lines end cleanly at corners and peaks, plus lit wreaths and garland at the door.

Wrapped trees
From a young yard tree to a big oak, trunks and limbs are wrapped by hand at an even spacing. Each tree is priced on its own.

Businesses and HOA entrances
Storefronts, parking lot trees and neighborhood entry monuments, designed to the city's lighting rules and quoted per property.
- A custom design for your house, sent back with your quote
- Commercial-grade LED lights and clips, supplied by Sapien
- Installation by our own crew, without drilling into stone or brick
- A timer set for the nights you choose
- Service during the season if lights we installed go out
- Takedown between January 2 and January 15
We do plug-in seasonal lighting only. If a display needs a new outdoor outlet or circuit, that is a job for a licensed electrician, and we'll tell you before install day. Everything else about our seasonal service is on the Christmas light installation page.
Hutto's lighting code, and how we plan around it
Hutto's Unified Development Code has an outdoor lighting section that, unlike many cities' rules, doesn't exempt single-family homes. It treats traditional holiday lighting as its own thing, so a seasonal display is fine. Year-round lighting on the roof is where the code gets strict.
| Rule (UDC Section 10.409) | What we do |
|---|---|
| 10.409.2: applies inside city limits, including Old Town and the Form Based Code district, but not in the ETJ | Check your address first. In the ETJ, your HOA's covenants are what to follow |
| 10.409.5: flashing, blinking or variably intense light is prohibited, except traditional holiday lighting not used to draw attention to a sign | Seasonal displays are allowed. We found no date window, and we take down January 2–15 |
| 10.409.3.1: no more than 5 lux at the property line for non cut-off lights (15 lux for cut-off lights), and no more than 5 lux spilling onto a residential lot | Aim lights at your house and trees, not the house next door |
| 10.409.10: roof-mounted and rooftop accent lighting is prohibited, and so is banding building edges with light | For permanent lights, we confirm with the city and your HOA before we design |
| 10.409.4: LED lamps must be warm white or natural | Year-round lighting in warm white |
What this means for your display
A warm white roofline, wrapped trees and a lit wreath are the kind of traditional holiday lighting the code leaves room for. What causes trouble is light pushed across the lot line: a bright projector or spotlight pointed at the street or a neighbor's windows.
Permanent roofline lights are a different question inside city limits, because they stay up all year. We'll talk it through with you and the city before you commit to anything.
This summary is based on the City of Hutto Unified Development Code (Code of Ordinances Chapter 16, revised March 2024), Section 10.409, last amended by Ordinance O-2021-059. The city has published a draft rewrite of the UDC (May 2025) that says all outdoor lighting must be fully shielded and can't trespass onto neighboring property. The city can change its code, so check the current version or ask Hutto Development Services if you're unsure.

What's different about lighting a Hutto home
City limits or ETJ
A Hutto mailing address doesn't always mean Hutto city limits. Outside them, in the ETJ, the city's lighting rules don't apply. We check your address so the design follows the right rules.
HOA neighborhoods
Hutto grew from 1,250 people in 2000 to 27,577 in 2020, and neighborhoods like Star Ranch, Carmel Creek, Hutto Lakes and Emory Farms have HOAs. Send us your HOA's guidelines and we'll design to them.
Permanent lights take a check
Inside city limits, the UDC prohibits roof-mounted accent lighting. If you want lights that stay up all year, we confirm with the city before we design, so you don't install something you'd have to take down.
Light stays on your lot
The code caps how much light reaches the property line. On neighborhood lots with houses close together, that means aiming every light at your house and trees.
No tree permits for your yard
Hutto's tree removal permits don't apply to existing homes. We don't prune or cut, and the Texas A&M Forest Service's February to June oak wilt season starts after our January takedown.
A downtown tradition
Hutto lights its Christmas tree in Historic Downtown each season, with a drone show in 2023.

Landscape lighting in Hutto
Sapien also designs and installs landscape lighting: uplit trees, path lights, patios and pet areas, and shadow mapping that plans each light around how the sun and shadows fall on your property.
Hutto's code is specific about landscape lights inside city limits. Bottom-mounted lights that light up landscaping and water features are allowed, but pole-mounted accent lights taller than a foot are not. Outdoor lighting has to be shielded, LEDs have to be warm white or natural, and the light reaching the property line is capped at 5 lux for non cut-off fixtures.
That's how we'd design it anyway: low, warm, ground-level light on the trees and the house, with nothing glaring into the street. In the ETJ, we design to the same standard and to your HOA's rules. Landscape lighting is quoted per property. See our landscape lighting page and how shadow mapping works.

About Hutto
Hutto is a fast-growing Williamson County city at US 79 and FM 1660, about 7 miles east of Round Rock and 22 miles northeast of Austin. Its mascot is a hippo, and there's a good story behind it.
- A railroad town, 1876. The International-Great Northern, Williamson County's first railroad, reached the site in 1876. Within a year there was a depot, a post office, a general store and a lumber business.
- Named for a rancher. The railroad bought 5 acres for "Hutto Station" from James Emory Hutto, a local rancher.
- The hippo, 1915. A hippo escaped from a stopped circus train and headed for Cottonwood Creek, holding up the trains. The town made it the mascot, and hippos are still the symbol of Hutto today.
- Incorporated in 1940, with 579 residents.
- The Co-Op District. The Hutto Cotton and Grain Co-op ran from 1937 to 2003. The city bought the site in 2003 and turned the gin building into an open-air event venue. City Hall and the library are there now.
- A boom. Hutto had 630 residents in 1990, 1,250 in 2000, 14,698 in 2010 and 27,577 at the 2020 census. Wikipedia estimates 46,048 for 2025. Schools are Hutto ISD.

Hutto Christmas lights: frequently asked questions
Are Christmas lights allowed under Hutto's lighting code?
Yes. Hutto's Unified Development Code bans flashing, blinking or variably intense lights, but it makes an exception for traditional holiday lighting that isn't used to draw attention to a sign (Section 10.409.5). We found no holiday date window in the code. We still keep displays aimed at your house so light doesn't spill onto the neighbors.
Does it matter if I live in the city or the ETJ?
Yes. Hutto's outdoor lighting section applies inside city limits, including Old Town and the Form Based Code district, but not in the ETJ (Section 10.409.2). If your Hutto address is outside city limits, the city's lighting rules don't apply, and your HOA's covenants are what to follow. Tell us your address and we'll check.
Can I get permanent Christmas lights in Hutto?
Yes, we install them. Inside Hutto city limits there's a rule to plan around: Section 10.409.10 prohibits roof-mounted and rooftop accent lighting, and lighting that bands building edges. The code doesn't say clearly how that applies to year-round eave lights on a house, so before we design yours we check with Hutto Development Services and your HOA, and plan around what they say. In the ETJ, the city's lighting section doesn't apply. More in our permanent Christmas light guide.
What about my HOA?
Neighborhoods such as Star Ranch, Carmel Creek, Hutto Lakes and Emory Farms have HOAs. We couldn't find their lighting rules published online, so send us your HOA's guidelines with your photos and we'll design to them.
How much does Christmas light installation cost in Hutto?
The same as across the Austin area. With Sapien in 2026, a single-story front roofline starts at $500, a two-story front roofline starts at $1,100 and a full front (roofline, trees, bushes and a wreath or garland) starts at $1,800. The minimum job is $500. A small tree with its canopy lightly wrapped is $150 to $300.
Do I need a permit to wrap the trees in my yard?
Hutto's tree removal permits cover undeveloped, redevelopment and non-residential sites, so existing homes don't need one. And Sapien doesn't remove, prune or cut anything. We wrap around the tree as it is and take everything down in January.
When do you put the lights up and take them down?
Installs run through October and November, and the timer keeps the lights off until the night you want. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. Takedown is January 2 to January 15.
Do you do landscape lighting in Hutto?
Yes: uplit trees, path lights, patios, pet areas and shadow mapping. Inside city limits we follow the UDC: shielded, warm white fixtures, bottom-mounted accent lights, and nothing on a pole over a foot tall. Landscape lighting is quoted per property.
Are you insured?
Yes. Sapien is fully insured. HOAs and businesses can request a certificate of insurance.
