What we light in Round Rock
A typical Round Rock display is the front roofline plus a tree or two in the yard, then bushes, a wreath and the porch. Every install includes a design for your house, commercial-grade lights and clips, the install, service if anything goes dark, and takedown in January.

Rooflines and ridgelines
C9 LED bulbs on commercial wire, cut to each run so lines end cleanly at corners and peaks. Clips are matched to your shingle, tile, metal or stone.

Businesses and HOAs
Parking lot trees, storefronts and neighborhood entrances. We plan commercial displays around the city's site-lighting limits, and each one is quoted per property.

Entries, wreaths and garland
Lit wreaths and garland on doors, gables and porch rails, so the front of the house reads well from the street.
- A custom design for your house, sent back with your quote
- Commercial-grade LED lights and clips, supplied by Sapien
- Installation by our own crew, without drilling into stone or brick
- A timer set for the nights you choose
- Service during the season if lights we installed go out
- Takedown between January 2 and January 15
We do plug-in seasonal lighting only. If a display needs a new outdoor outlet or circuit, that is a job for a licensed electrician, and we'll tell you before install day. Everything else about our seasonal service is on the Christmas light installation page.
Round Rock's lighting rules, and what applies to your house
Round Rock doesn't have a dark-sky ordinance or a holiday-light season like some cities west of Austin. Its lighting standards are written for new commercial and multifamily development, and they leave houses out. That puts most of the say over a home display with your HOA.
| Rule (Zoning and Development Code, Chapter 8) | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Sec. 8-1(a): the compatibility standards, lighting included, apply to new development in any zoning district except single-family and two-family houses | No city lighting limits on a home display. We found no date window, curfew or permit rule for houses |
| Sec. 8-1(b)(4): commercial and multifamily site lighting must keep the source concealed in an opaque housing, can't flash, blink or pulse, and can't exceed 0.5 foot-candles at a residential property line | For businesses and apartments, we keep displays steady, aimed at the building and trees, and off the neighbors' lots |
| Sec. 8-1(b)(1) and (2): no lighting that substantially interferes with the use of another lot, and no glare onto streets | Same idea for commercial sites: light the property, not the road |
| Sec. 8-72(a)(4): holiday decorations with no commercial message, shown only at the right time of year, are exempt from the sign rules | A business can put up seasonal lights without a sign permit, as long as they don't carry a message |
Your HOA comes first
Many Round Rock neighborhoods are municipal utility districts with an HOA on top, including Teravista, Paloma Lake, Siena, Vista Oaks, Walsh Ranch, Fern Bluff and Brushy Creek. Their covenants can set when lights go up, how long they stay and what can be mounted on the house. We couldn't find those rules published online, so send us yours with your photos and we'll design inside them.
Even where nothing applies, we aim lights at your house and trees, not at the house next door. Warm white rooflines and wrapped trees rarely bother anyone.
This summary is based on the Round Rock Code of Ordinances, Part III, Zoning and Development Code, Chapter 8, Sections 8-1 and 8-72. The official code is on Municode, and we read it from a copy on Zoneomics. The city can change its code, so check the current version or ask the city if you're unsure.

What's different about lighting a Round Rock home
Two kinds of ground
Round Rock sits on the Balcones Escarpment. West of I-35 it's hilly limestone with thin soil, and east of I-35 it's flat Blackland Prairie clay. A photo of the yard helps us plan the ground runs.
HOA neighborhoods
A lot of Round Rock lives in master-planned MUD neighborhoods with their own covenants. We work from your HOA's guidelines, so send them along with your photos.
Protected monarch trees
On developed home lots, Round Rock protects monarch trees, and pruning one needs a city permit. Sapien never prunes. On a monarch we wrap loosely and staple-free, and everything comes off in January.
Oak wilt season
The Texas A&M Forest Service says to avoid wounding or pruning oaks from February to June. Our takedown is done by January 15, well before that window.
A lit-up downtown
Downtown Round Rock lights its trees, oversized ornaments and archways each December for Hometown Holiday. If you like that look, wrapped trees bring it home.
Businesses and apartments
Commercial and multifamily sites have the city's site-lighting limits: steady light, concealed sources and no more than 0.5 foot-candles at a home's property line. We design to them.

Landscape lighting in Round Rock
Sapien also designs and installs landscape lighting: uplit trees, moonlighting from the canopy, path and step lights, patios and pet areas, and shadow mapping that plans each light around how the sun and shadows fall on your property.
Round Rock's site-lighting standards don't apply to single-family homes, so at home the limits usually come from your HOA. For businesses and apartments, the city wants light sources concealed in an opaque housing, no flashing, and no more than 0.5 foot-candles at a residential property line.
We design to the same standard at home anyway: low, warm, shielded light that shows off the trees and the house without glare into a neighbor's window. Landscape lighting is quoted per property. See our landscape lighting page and how shadow mapping works.

About Round Rock
Round Rock is a city of about 119,000 on I-35, around 16 miles north of downtown Austin. It's mostly in Williamson County, with a small part in Travis County, and it takes its name from a rock in Brushy Creek.
- A blacksmith's shop, 1848. Jacob M. Harrell, a blacksmith from Austin, opened a shop on the north bank of Brushy Creek in the spring of 1848. The settlement was first called Brushy Creek.
- Named for the rock, 1854. On August 24, 1854, it was renamed Round Rock after the anvil-shaped limestone rock in the creek where Harrell and Thomas C. Oatts fished. Chisholm Trail cattle drives later crossed the creek at the rock.
- New Round Rock. In 1876 the International-Great Northern Railroad passed south of the creek. A new town grew up by the tracks, and the first site became Old Round Rock.
- Sam Bass, 1878. The outlaw Sam Bass was shot in a gunfight downtown. Old Settlers Park re-enacts the shootout each July 4.
- From small town to big city. Round Rock incorporated in 1913. The I-35 route was settled in its favor in 1956, and Dell moved its headquarters here in the late 1990s. The population grew 353% in the 1980s and 143% in the 1990s, and reached 119,468 at the 2020 census.
- Landmarks. The round rock and Chisholm Trail Crossing Park with its bronze cattle and drovers, the 1878 Old Post Office on Main Street, the Palm House Museum, Round Rock Donuts (since 1926) and Dell Diamond, home of the Round Rock Express.

Round Rock Christmas lights: frequently asked questions
Does Round Rock have a law about Christmas lights on houses?
Not one we could find. Round Rock's lighting standards are in Chapter 8 of its Zoning and Development Code, and Section 8-1(a) says they apply to new development in every zoning district except single-family and two-family houses. We found no holiday-light date window, curfew or permit rule for homes. Your HOA may still have its own rules, so check your neighborhood's guidelines.
What about my HOA?
Many Round Rock neighborhoods, including Teravista, Paloma Lake, Siena, Vista Oaks, Walsh Ranch and Fern Bluff, have HOAs with their own covenants. Send us your HOA's guidelines with your photos and we'll design the display to fit them.
Are there rules for lighting a business or apartment complex in Round Rock?
Yes. Under Section 8-1(b)(4), commercial and multifamily site lighting must keep the light source concealed in an opaque housing, can't flash, blink or pulse, and can't exceed 0.5 foot-candles at a residential property line. Holiday decorations with no commercial message are exempt from the sign code (Section 8-72) when shown at the right time of year. Commercial and HOA displays are quoted per property.
Can I get permanent Christmas lights in Round Rock?
Yes, we install them. Because Round Rock's lighting standards don't apply to single-family homes, the city isn't the hurdle for most houses. Your HOA may be, since some ask for approval before anything is mounted on the house year-round. We'll help you put together what your HOA needs to see. One of our Round Rock customers, Carina H., chose year-round lights so she'd never have to put up and take down lights again. More in our permanent Christmas light guide.
How much does Christmas light installation cost in Round Rock?
Round Rock is priced the same as the rest of the Austin area. In 2026 a single-story front roofline starts at $500, a two-story front roofline starts at $1,100 and a full front (roofline, trees, bushes and a wreath or garland) starts at $1,800. The minimum job is $500, and trees are priced one by one.
My yard has a big old oak. Can you light it without hurting it?
Yes. Sapien doesn't prune, and we wrap around the tree as it is. On developed home lots Round Rock protects monarch trees, and pruning one takes a city permit, so we never cut. A large live oak, trunk or trunk plus some limbs, runs $500 to $1,000, and a very large oak with multiple branches is $1,500 to $3,000.
When will my lights go up and come down?
Most installs happen in October and November, with the timer holding the lights off until the night you pick. Thanksgiving night is Thursday, November 26, 2026. Takedown runs from January 2 to January 15.
Do you do landscape lighting in Round Rock?
Yes: uplit trees, moonlighting, path and step lights, patios, pet areas and shadow mapping. Landscape lighting is quoted per property.
Do you need to come out to give me a price?
Usually not. Text daytime photos of the front of the house, each tree and your outdoor outlets to (737) 777-9099, and we'll send back a design and price.
Are you insured?
Yes. Sapien is fully insured. HOAs and businesses can request a certificate of insurance.
